A hidden gem in the foothills of the Southern Alps, just an hour and a half from Christchurch.

The Waimakariri River drains the eastern side of the Arthurs Pass region of the South Island, flowing through steep-sided gorges into a braided river across the Canterbury Plains.

Your journey starts with a braided river close to Arthurs Pass and explores the Otarama and Carrington gorges, finishing at the head of the braided Waimakariri as it spreads across the Canterbury Plains.

You will experience varied landscapes, beautiful gorges, amazing campsites or huts, and a pristine river.

Camping / Huts

Both beautiful tree-covered campsites and back-country huts are available for your Waimakariri journey.
